Anup Jalota earned the epithet ‘Bhajan Samrat’ (Emperor of Bhajans) for his five decades dominating devotional music, with over 1,500 recorded bhajans and ghazals spanning nine languages. He began as a chorus singer at All India Radio before ascending to international concert circuits, performing across five continents. His third marriage to Medha Gujral, niece of former PM Inder Kumar Gujral, produced a son; Medha died in 2014.
The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2012, recognizing his contributions to classical vocal music. He holds a Guinness World Record for platinum discs and charged performance fees around 7-8 lakhs per show. His public profile intensified during his 2018 Bigg Boss 12 appearance alongside contestant Jasleen Matharu, who is 37 years his junior.
Beyond singing, Jalota ventured into film production with two Hindi releases and acting roles including a portrayal of Satya Sai Baba. He collaborated with luminaries including Zakir Hussain and Lata Mangeshkar, cementing his status as one of Indian classical music’s most prolific and recognized figures.
