Anurag Basu, a Bengali director born in Bhilai, made his breakthrough with the erotic thriller Murder in 2004. He followed this with Gangster: A Love Story and the ensemble urban drama Life in a Metro, establishing himself in Hindi cinema with a distinctive vision.
His acclaimed romantic comedy-drama Barfi! in 2012 became his highest-grossing film and earned a Filmfare nomination for Best Director. The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, was selected as India’s official entry for the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film category.
After the box office disappointment of Jagga Jasoos in 2017, Basu directed the Netflix black comedy crime film Ludo in 2020, which also marked his directorial debut as cinematographer. The film earned him his third Filmfare nomination for Best Director.
