Anurag Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap is Hindi cinema’s designated troublemaker, the filmmaker whose early scripts and films kept running into censors and shelvings, and who turned that friction into a whole aesthetic. His work is loud, violent, profane and morally murky, the opposite of the glossy mainstream, and a generation of independent Indian filmmakers grew up in his shadow.

Black Friday, on the 1993 Mumbai blasts, was held up for years; Dev.D reinvented a literary classic as a druggy modern fever dream; and Gangs of Wasseypur, a sprawling two-part crime saga, became his international calling card. He champions new talent relentlessly, producing and mentoring outside the studio system.

Combative on social media and candid to a fault in interviews, he is a natural headline generator and a familiar face at festivals and screenings. Our cameras find him a lively subject.
