Anusha Dandekar has one of the more geographically improbable backstories in Indian entertainment. Born in Khartoum in 1982 to a Marathi family from Pune, raised in Kingsgrove in the Sydney suburbs alongside her sisters Shibani and Apeksha, she moved to Mumbai in the early 2000s to try the entertainment business.
MTV India is where she became familiar. Hosting MTV Dance Crew, MTV Teen Diva and MTV Rock On through the years when MTV genuinely set the tone for young urban India made her one of the defining VJs of that era, which is a specific and now largely vanished kind of fame.
She acted too, debuting in Mumbai Matinee in 2003 and appearing in Viruddh two years later, and she sings. In 2017 she became a mentor on India’s Next Top Model, which put her back in front of the audience she started with, a decade older.
