Arijit Singh lost a reality singing competition years before he became the most in-demand voice in the country, which is the kind of detail that ages very badly for the judges. Since Tum Hi Ho in 2013, he has essentially been the default sound of the Hindi film love song, to the point that a hit soundtrack without him started to feel incomplete.

The appeal is a certain unforced ache, a voice that sounds like it means the heartbreak rather than performing it. Channa Mereya, Kesariya and dozens of others became the songs a whole generation played on loop. Offstage he is famously unglamorous and unbothered by the trappings, still based in his small Bengal hometown rather than Mumbai.

That low profile makes a public sighting genuinely uncommon, which the paparazzi and our cameras both appreciate when it happens.
