Divya Dutta belongs to the category of actor the industry cannot function without and rarely puts on the poster: the character player who quietly walks off with scenes from the leads. Across three decades she has built a body of work in the margins of big films that is more interesting than many a headliner’s.

Veer-Zaara, Delhi-6 and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag gave her memorable supporting turns, and Irada handed her a rare lead that won her a National Award, a belated bit of recognition for a career of stealing the show in fewer scenes than she deserved. She has also written a well-received memoir, which is not something most working actresses find the time for.
