Farhan Akhtar

Farhan Akhtar, son of the lyricist Javed Akhtar, changed the texture of mainstream Hindi cinema with his very first film. Dil Chahta Hai in 2001 felt like a different, more urban, more conversational kind of Bollywood, and a generation of filmmakers took notes.

Then, having established himself as a director and producer, he did the improbable and became a leading man too, most memorably lifting his own body into shape to play the athlete Milkha Singh in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. He fronts a rock band, writes, produces socially-minded television, and runs a company that has backed some of the more interesting films of the last two decades.

Married to Shibani Dandekar, he moves in the industry’s most connected circles and turns up at every significant event. The paparazzi track him closely, and our cameras among them.
