Guru Randhawa came out of a village in Punjab and rode the YouTube era to a kind of stardom that barely existed a decade earlier, the streaming-native pop singer whose biggest hits count their views in the billions rather than the millions. High Rated Gabru and Lahore made him a global Punjabi-pop name well before Bollywood came calling.
When it did, his sound, catchy, danceable, built for the algorithm, slotted neatly into film soundtracks and party playlists alike, and a collaboration with Pitbull on Slowly Slowly signalled the cross-border ambition. He writes much of his own material, which sets him slightly apart from the feature-driven pop pack.
He is a regular on the awards and event circuit, camera-ready and increasingly recognisable. Our lenses catch him around Mumbai when he is in town.
