When Hrithik Roshan debuted in his father’s Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai in 2000, the reaction bordered on hysteria, the kind of overnight stardom that usually curdles fast. It did not, largely because there turned out to be a real dancer and a real leading man behind the green eyes and the much-discussed physique.

Koi Mil Gaya and its Krrish sequels gave Indian cinema a homegrown superhero franchise; Jodhaa Akbar showed the period-epic register; Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara let him be loose and human. He is often called the best dancer of his generation, and few who have seen him move argue the point.

He picks his projects slowly and disappears between them, which keeps every appearance an event. The paparazzi treat a Hrithik sighting accordingly, and so, when he turns up on our cameras, do we.
