Jackie Shroff

Jackie Shroff came up from a chawl in south Mumbai, was spotted as a model, and rode the 1983 hit Hero to instant leading-man status, a genuine rags-to-stardom story that he has never bothered to sand down. The street-smart warmth and the distinctive drawl, everyone is “bhidu”, have kept him beloved across four decades.

Parinda and Ram Lakhan were the peak-stardom years; Rangeela showed a lighter, self-aware touch; and rather than fading into retirement he reinvented himself as one of the busiest and most interesting character actors around, popping up everywhere from big Telugu spectacles to quirky indies. His son Tiger carries the family into the current generation.

Famously eccentric and endlessly quotable, he is a gift to any camera crew that finds him. Ours count him among the most enjoyable subjects on the beat.
