Janhvi Kapoor arrived under a spotlight nobody would wish for, the elder daughter of the producer Boney Kapoor and the beloved Sridevi, launching in Dhadak just months after her mother’s sudden death. That she has kept working steadily since, rather than folding under the scrutiny, is the quiet story of her career so far.

Gunjan Saxena cast her as India’s first woman air-force officer in combat; Mili put her alone in a freezer for most of a survival thriller; and Devara took her into big-budget Telugu cinema. She is still finding the roles that will define her, but the range of the attempts is more interesting than the star-kid tag allows.

She is one of the most-photographed young women in the country, tracked to the gym and back, and takes the paparazzi attention with practised good humour. Our cameras find her often.
