Jaya Bachchan is an Indian actress and politician born on 9 April 1948, one of the most gifted actresses of Hindi cinema’s 1970s golden age. A Film and Television Institute of India gold medallist, she debuted as a teenager in Satyajit Ray’s Mahanagar and broke through as an adult star in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Guddi (1971).
She formed a celebrated on-screen and real-life partnership with Amitabh Bachchan in films like Abhimaan, Sholay and Mili, and later returned in matriarch roles such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. She holds numerous Filmfare Awards and the Padma Shri, and has served as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament since 2004.
She married Amitabh Bachchan in 1973, and their children are Shweta and actor Abhishek Bachchan.
