Johnny Lever

John Prakash Rao Janumala, professionally known as Johnny Lever, is an Indian actor and comedian born in August 1957 in Kanigiri, Andhra Pradesh. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest comedians in Indian cinema and one of the first stand-up comedians in India. Lever began his career in 1984 and has appeared in over 300 Hindi films, earning thirteen Filmfare Award nominations and winning twice for his work in Deewana Mastana and Dulhe Raja.

His entry into cinema followed a career in musical orchestras and charity shows throughout the early 1980s. He is known for his distinctive comic timing, mimicry abilities, and versatile acting skills. His influence on Indian comedy has been substantial, with many contemporary comedians citing him as an inspiration for their careers.

Growing up in Mumbai’s Dharavi area after relocating from Andhra Pradesh, Lever developed his comedic talents through street performances and imitation of Bollywood stars. He remains a defining figure in Indian film comedy and continues to be recognised for his contributions to the entertainment industry since the 1980s.
