Kumar Sanu

Kumar Sanu (born Kedarnath Bhattacharya, 20 October 1957) is an acclaimed Indian playback singer known as the King of Melody. His father, vocalist and composer Pashupati Bhattacharya, trained him in singing and tabla. After graduating from Calcutta University with a degree in commerce, he began performing in 1979 at shows and restaurants in Calcutta.

He rose to prominence in Hindi cinema during the 1990s, winning five consecutive Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer from 1990 to 1994 for his work in films including Aashiqui, Saajan, Deewana, Baazigar, and 1942: A Love Story. In 1986, he appeared in the Bangladeshi film Tin Kanya, followed by his first major Bollywood song in Hero Hiralal (1989).

Beyond Hindi, Kumar Sanu has performed in multiple Indian languages including Bengali, Marathi, Nepali, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. He holds a Guinness World Record for recording 28 songs in a single day. For his contributions to Indian cinema and music, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor.
