Lillete Dubey

Lillete Dubey has spent fifty years doing the thing most Indian film actors only claim to do, which is theatre, properly and continuously. Born in 1953, she started with Barry John in Delhi and was a founding member of his Theatre Action Group in 1973, then set up her own company, The Primetime Theatre Company, in 1991. It is still running.

The films came later and she has been quietly excellent in an unusual number of them. Zubeidaa, Monsoon Wedding, which took the Golden Lion at Venice, Chalte Chalte, Baghban, Kal Ho Naa Ho, My Brother Nikhil. Then The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, whose ensemble took a BAFTA, put her in front of an audience that had never watched a Hindi film in their lives.
