Mahesh Bhatt

A prominent Hindi film director, Mahesh Bhatt rose to prominence in the 1980s with bold narratives exploring social issues. His breakthrough film Saaransh (1984) was India’s official Academy Award submission for Best Foreign Language Film and screened at the Moscow International Film Festival. Over his career, he directed nearly eighty films addressing discrimination, casteism, corruption, and injustice.

His most recognized works include Arth (1982), Zakhm (1998), and Raaz (2002), which combined emotional depth with gritty realism. Bhatt’s approach to Hindi cinema, tackling unconventional themes and complex narratives, influenced filmmakers throughout the 1990s and beyond.
