Makarand Deshpande

Makarand Deshpande has carved an unusual path through Indian entertainment as an actor-writer-director across Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Telugu, and Malayalam cinema. He’s built a reputation for supporting and pivotal roles, drunkards, wayfarers, comic relief, in films like Swades and Sarfarosh, with a 2024 English-language turn in Monkey Man.

The bulk of his career, however, has unfolded on stage. Since 1990 at Prithvi Theatre, he’s authored over 350 full-length plays and founded Ansh Theatre Group in 1993 alongside Kay Kay Menon. His theatrical output remains prolific and largely under the radar of mainstream cinema discussions.

Deshpande is known for an unconventional persona, distinctive outfits, unusual hairstyles, and maintains a base in Mumbai’s Vile Parle. He represents a rare breed in Indian entertainment: a serious, prolific writer whose impact registers primarily within theatre circles rather than film celebrity.
