Manisha Koirala is a Nepali actress born on 16 August 1970 in Kathmandu, into the prominent Koirala political family, who became one of the finest and most sensitive leading ladies of 1990s Hindi cinema. She broke through with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s romance 1942: A Love Story (1994).
She gave landmark performances in Mani Ratnam’s Bombay and Dil Se, and the musical drama Khamoshi. After a courageous, public battle with ovarian cancer, she recovered and returned to acclaim, notably in Sanju and the series Heeramandi, and wrote a memoir about her illness.
Graceful and resilient, she remains one of the most respected actresses of her generation.
