Born Shashikala Seshadri in 1963, Meenakshi rose from Miss India 1981 to become one of Hindi cinema’s most recognizable leading actresses of the 1980s and 1990s. Her breakthrough arrived with Hero (1983) opposite Jackie Shroff, launching a decade-long career marked by commanding performances in commercial dramas and action films alongside major stars including Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol, and Amitabh Bachchan.
Trained in four classical Indian dance forms, she became equally celebrated for her dancing as her acting, earning critical acclaim for Swati (1986) and a career-defining performance in Damini (1993) opposite Aamir Khan. She appeared in over 70 Bollywood films before retiring from cinema following her 1995 marriage to investment banker Harish Mysore.
Now based in Plano, Texas, Seshadri operates the Cherish Dance School, teaching Bharata Natyam, Kathak, and Odissi. A 2006 documentary, Meenakshi Accept Her Wings, chronicled her transition from screen to homemaker, capturing her enduring commitment to classical dance.
