Mithun Chakraborty is an Indian actor and politician born on 16 June 1950 in Kolkata, a genuine screen legend with a career spanning five decades and some 350 films across Hindi, Bengali and other languages. He debuted in Mrinal Sen’s art-house drama Mrigayaa (1976), winning a National Film Award for Best Actor.
He became a nationwide phenomenon as the street dancer Jimmy in Disco Dancer (1982), a film whose fame reached far beyond India. Beyond his dancing-star image he has delivered serious work in films like Tahader Katha and Agneepath, and in later years The Kashmir Files. He holds three National Film Awards and the Padma Bhushan.
He is married to actress Yogeeta Bali.
