Mouni Roy came from about as far outside the industry as it is possible to start. Born in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, in 1985 into a Bengali-speaking Rajbongshi family, with a grandfather who was a well-known Jatra theatre artist and a mother in theatre too, she was sent to Delhi to study. She graduated from Miranda House and started mass communication at Jamia Millia Islamia at her parents’ insistence, then left it midway and went to Mumbai anyway.
Television made her. Playing Sati in Devon Ke Dev… Mahadev from 2011 gave her a national audience, and Naagin turned her into a phenomenon, winning her the ITA Award for Best Actress Popular. That show is a genuine cultural fact in India, however the film industry likes to talk about it.
Which is what makes Brahmastra interesting. Playing Junoon, the main antagonist, she got the kind of reviews that television actors are usually refused on principle, and it did what she needed it to do: it broke the Naagin ceiling.
