Munawar Faruqui

Munawar Faruqui’s career is one of the more remarkable comeback stories in Indian entertainment, and one of the more uncomfortable ones for what it says about the times. A stand-up comedian from a modest background in Gujarat, he was jailed in 2021 over jokes he had not even performed, a case that became a flashpoint in the fight over free speech and comedy in India.

Rather than end his career, the ordeal made him a household name. He won the reality show Lock Upp, then won Bigg Boss 17, and built a parallel career as a rapper with a large and devoted following. It is a rare arc, from cancelled and imprisoned to prime-time champion, and he has navigated it with a certain wary showmanship.
