Nandita Das is an Indian actress and filmmaker born on 7 November 1969 in Mumbai, the daughter of artist Jatin Das, and one of the most principled voices in Indian cinema. She has acted in more than 40 films across ten languages, largely in the parallel and world-cinema space.
She drew international attention with Deepa Mehta’s Fire and Earth, and the National Award-winning Bawandar. As a director she made the acclaimed Firaaq (2008) and the biopic Manto (2018) on the writer Saadat Hasan Manto. She is also a noted activist for social causes.
Serious and socially committed, she has always used film as a vehicle for conscience.
