Naseeruddin Shah is an Indian actor and director born on 20 July 1950, one of the towering figures of Indian cinema and a leading light of the parallel-cinema movement. A National School of Drama and FTII graduate, he brought a rare naturalism to Hindi film acting.
He built an extraordinary body of work across art-house landmarks like Sparsh, Nishant and Mirch Masala and beloved mainstream films like Masoom, Karma and later A Wednesday and Sarfarosh. He holds three National Film Awards and the Volpi Cup at Venice, and remains an influential, outspoken presence in theatre and film.
He is married to actress Ratna Pathak Shah, and their sons include actor Imaad and Vivaan Shah.
