Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s origin story has been told so often it risks becoming a cliche, the farmer’s son from a small UP town, the years of bit parts and near-poverty in Mumbai, the watchman job. What redeems the telling is that the eventual payoff was real: he became one of the finest character actors India has produced.

Gangs of Wasseypur made him a name, The Lunchbox and Manto showed the delicacy under the menace, and Sacred Games handed him a monologue-heavy antihero that streaming audiences worldwide devoured. He is that rare actor who can be repellent and sympathetic in the same scene, often in the same look.

He keeps a relatively low public profile for a star of his standing, which makes a sighting a slightly less frantic affair than most. Our cameras are glad to catch him when they can.
