Most Hindi film audiences met Nayanthara in 2023, opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Jawan. She had been a major star for nearly twenty years by then, which is a good illustration of how separately the industries can run.
Born Diana Mariam Kurian in 1984, she took the screen name Nayanthara, meaning star of the eyes, and made it her legal name in 2011. The body of work is Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, more than seventy-five films, and the awards shelf holds five Filmfare Awards South, three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, a Nandi Award and seven SIIMA Awards. In 2018 she was the only South Indian actress on the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list, and she has been among the highest-paid actresses in the country.
She played a lawyer opposite Rajinikanth in Annaatthe in 2021, and Jawan turned out to be her highest-grossing film. She produces as well. She is married to the filmmaker Vignesh Shivan and they have two children.
