Priyanka Chopra won Miss World in 2000 and could have coasted on it. Instead she built one of the more improbable careers in the business, from beauty queen to National Award-winning actress to the first genuine Bollywood-to-Hollywood crossover of her generation.

The Hindi-film case for her is strong on its own: the model unravelling in Fashion, the boxer in Mary Kom, the sharp foil in Barfi and Bajirao Mastani. Then she did something almost no Indian star had managed, headlining an American network drama in Quantico and staying, moving to Los Angeles, marrying into the Jonas family, and turning herself into a producer and a brand with global reach.

She returns to India less often now, which means a Priyanka sighting on home turf is a proper occasion for the camera crews. When she is in town, the lenses know before anyone else does.
