Rajkumar Santoshi is a prolific Hindi cinema director born in Chennai in 1956 who moved to Mumbai as a child and became one of Indian film’s most commercially successful auteurs. He burst onto the scene with Ghayal in 1990, the Sunny Deol thriller that won him the National Film Award for Best Popular Film and a Filmfare for Best Director, establishing his signature style: slick, propulsive entertainment.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Santoshi directed a series of hits including the thrillers Damini and Ghatak, the cult-classic comedy Andaz Apna Apna, the period biopic The Legend of Bhagat Singh, and the neo-noir Khakee. Each demonstrated his range and commercial instincts, earning him three National Film Awards and six Filmfare Awards over his career.

His biggest box-office success came in 2009 with Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, the romantic comedy starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif that grossed over 1.2 billion rupees worldwide. Santoshi remains a marquee name in Hindi cinema, respected for delivering intelligent genre films that connect with mass audiences.
