Rajkummar Rao

Rajkummar Rao is the standard example whenever anyone wants to argue that talent still beats connections in Hindi cinema. An FTII graduate from Gurgaon with no film background, he ground his way up through supporting parts until the work simply became impossible to ignore.

Shahid, in which he played a murdered human-rights lawyer, won him a National Award; Newton took him to the Oscars as India’s official entry; and then Stree proved he could open a mainstream horror-comedy franchise, which quietly made him commercial as well as acclaimed. Few actors move so easily between the festival circuit and the multiplex.

Married to the actress Patralekha, he is a regular on the Mumbai promotional beat and an approachable subject for the pack. Our lenses see plenty of him.
