Rakhi Sawant, born Neeru Bheda on 25 November 1978 in Mumbai, adopted her stage name from her stepfather. Starting with minor roles in 1997, she became Bollywood’s preeminent item dancer through the breakout hit ‘Mohabbat Hai Mirchi’ in 2003, appearing in films like Main Hoon Na and Masti throughout the 2000s.
Her television prominence exploded as a contestant on Bigg Boss 1 (2006), establishing her as India’s most recognisable reality TV personality. She parlayed this into hosting Rakhi Ka Swayamwar (2009), appearing on Nach Baliye, and competing again in Bigg Boss 14 (2020), all while maintaining a reputation for controversial statements and fearless candour.
Beyond entertainment, she launched a political party in 2014 and served as state vice-president of the Republican Party of India. Her personal life drew constant media scrutiny; she married NRI businessman Ritesh in 2019 (divorced 2022), then Adil Khan Durrani in 2022, converting to Islam and adopting the name Fatima. She separated from Durrani in February 2023.
