There are directors, and then there is the man who made Sholay. Ramesh Sippy, born in Karachi in 1947, handed Hindi cinema the film it has been quoting for fifty years, and no amount of work before or since changes that this is the first sentence in any account of him.
He had already proved himself before it. Seeta Aur Geeta in 1972, his second film, gave Hema Malini a dual role and propelled her to superstardom, which would be a career for most people. Then Sholay landed in 1975 and simply became the reference point that every Hindi action film since has been measured against, usually unfavourably.
Shaan followed in 1980 and Saagar in 1985. The Government of India gave him the Padma Shri in 2013.
