Rani Mukerji is an Indian actress born in Mumbai on March 21, 1978, who works primarily in Bollywood Hindi-language films. She comes from a prominent film family and made her acting debut as a teenager in her father Ram Mukherjee’s Bengali film Biyer Phool (1996), followed by her first Hindi film Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat.
Mukerji achieved breakthrough success with the 1998 films Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the latter becoming a landmark in her career. She established herself as a leading actress through commercially successful romantic dramas and received critical acclaim for her diverse roles, most notably her award-winning performance in Black (2005) playing a blind, deaf and mute woman opposite Amitabh Bachchan.
A recipient of multiple National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards, Mukerji became one of Bollywood’s highest-paid actresses of the 2000s. She married filmmaker Aditya Chopra in 2014 and took a hiatus before returning with notable performances including her award-winning role in Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway (2023). She continues her work through Yash Raj Films, having become a director in 2014.
