Rekha Bhardwaj is an accomplished Indian playback singer who performs across multiple genres including Bollywood, Sufi, folk and classical music. Born in Delhi, she received formal training under Pandit Amarnath and earned a graduate degree in Hindustani classical music with specialization in ghazal performance.
She released her debut album Ishqa Ishqa in 2002, which marked the beginning of her career-defining work in Hindi cinema. Her rendition of Namak Ishq Ka from Omkara brought her widespread recognition, followed by celebrated collaborations with A.R. Rahman on tracks like Genda Phool and Ranjha Ranjha. She has recorded in Hindi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Marathi, Punjabi and Malayalam.
Bhardwaj has received two Filmfare Awards for Best Playback Singer and a National Film Award. She is married to filmmaker and composer Vishal Bhardwaj, whom she met at Hindu College in Delhi in 1984 and married in 1991. Her distinctive vocal style and emotional interpretations have made her one of Bollywood’s most sought-after playback singers.
