Rohit Shetty is the man who made flying cars a genre. The son of the stunt artist and villain M. B. Shetty, he grew up on film sets and turned a deep, unironic love of spectacle into the most reliably profitable directing career in commercial Hindi cinema. Nobody blows up a jeep with more conviction.

The Golmaal comedies and the Chennai Express blockbuster made him a box-office force, and then Singham launched his “cop universe”, a whole interconnected franchise of thundering police action that has become his signature. Critics rarely swoon; audiences rarely stay away. He also hosts the stunt reality show Khatron Ke Khiladi, which suits a filmmaker who genuinely enjoys the danger.
