Saba Azad

Born Saba Singh Grewal to a Punjabi Sikh father and Kashmiri Muslim mother, Azad entered the spotlight as the niece of theatre legend Safdar Hashmi, cutting her teeth with Jana Natya Manch before pursuing a formal acting career. She graduated to indie cinema with roles in Dil Kabaddi and claimed her widest audience with the charming rom-com Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge, proving she could anchor a film.

Azad balances screen work with her theatrical roots: she founded The Skins in 2010 and directed her debut play Lovepuke at NCPA’s experimental theatre. On the music front, she co-founded Madboy/Mink with actor-musician Imaad Shah, establishing herself as a serious voice in India’s indie electronic scene.

A trained dancer versed in jazz, Latin, Odissi, and contemporary forms, Azad has cultivated a career on her own terms, neither chasing blockbusters nor settling for tokenism. She remains a fixture in indie cinema and theatre circles, more substance than celebrity gossip.
