Saif Ali Khan is the son of the cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and the actress Sharmila Tagore, actual nobility (the Pataudi title) married to Bengali film royalty, and for a while in the nineties he seemed content to coast on charm in forgettable roles. Then Dil Chahta Hai in 2001 rewired him.

That film, and the run that followed, remade him as the thinking woman’s leading man and a sharp comic presence, Hum Tum winning him a National Award. Omkara showed a darker gear as the scheming Langda Tyagi, and years later Sacred Games proved he had aged into a compelling character actor rather than a fading star.

Married to Kareena Kapoor, he anchors one of the industry’s most-watched families, and the paparazzi cover the Pataudi-Kapoor comings and goings like a beat of their own. Ours included.
