Salim Merchant

Salim Merchant was born in Mumbai on March 3, 1974, to a musically inclined family with roots in Kutch. His father, Sadruddin Merchant, was a music director and veteran of the Telugu Film Industry who ran an instruments manufacturing business. Salim studied piano at Trinity College of Music in London and also trained in harmonium under Ustad Sultan Khan.

He forms the influential Bollywood composer duo Salim-Sulaiman with his brother Sulaiman, having collaborated since 1993. Together they’ve scored over 100 Hindi films and achieved breakthrough success with the 2003 thriller Bhoot, followed by defining work on Chak De! India, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, and Fashion. The pair extended their reach to international projects including a FIFA World Cup anthem.

Salim is married to Jeanne, a jazz musician who now runs a music academy for toddlers. Beyond film composition, he works as a music judge and performer, maintaining an active presence in both Bollywood and live music circuits.
