Salman Khan

Few careers in Hindi cinema have been written off as often, or as wrongly, as Salman Khan’s. He broke through as the fresh-faced romantic lead of Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989, spent the family-drama years of Hum Aapke Hain Koun as the wedding-video nation’s favourite, and then hit a stretch where the tabloids had more to say about him than the reviews did.

Then came Dabangg in 2010, and with it the second act: the swaggering, shirt-ripping action star whose films became Eid fixtures regardless of what the critics made of them. Sultan and Bajrangi Bhaijaan showed there was still an actor in there when the material asked for one, the latter genuinely among his best.

He hosts Bigg Boss, runs a production house, and remains the kind of star whose fanbase operates less like an audience and more like a standing army. The cameras never stop finding him, and neither do we.
