Sanjay Leela Bhansali makes films the way other people build cathedrals, at enormous cost, over long stretches, with a fanaticism about every candle and drapery in the frame. He took his mother’s name, Leela, as his middle one, and grew up poor in a Mumbai chawl, which makes the sheer opulence of his cinema its own kind of statement.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas established the lavish, operatic register; Black stripped it back for one of his most acclaimed dramas; and the period epics Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat, magnificent and controversial in equal measure, became the definitive Bhansali productions. His films regularly attract protest as readily as praise, which he seems to regard as part of the job.
He is a less visible figure than his stars, so a Bhansali sighting carries a certain rarity. Our cameras value the glimpses.
