Shoojit Sircar

Shoojit Sircar makes the sort of small, humane, closely-observed films that Hindi cinema does not produce nearly often enough. He tends to find the drama in the ordinary, a sperm-donation comedy in Vicky Donor, a father and daughter and a case of constipation on a road trip in Piku, and to trust his actors and his silences more than his plot.

Piku, built around Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone, is probably his best-loved work, but Pink turned a courtroom drama into a landmark conversation about consent, and Sardar Udham showed he could handle a sweeping historical canvas when he wanted to. October was almost plotless and quietly devastating, the purest expression of his method.

A low-key figure by the standards of his peers, he draws the cameras chiefly at festivals and screenings. Our lenses appreciate the occasional glimpse.
