Shriya Saran wanted to be a dancer and ended up one of the few genuinely pan-Indian stars of her generation, working across Telugu, Tamil and Hindi cinema at a time when crossing those lines was much harder than it looks now.
She debuted in Telugu with Ishtam in 2001 and had her first real success with Santosham in 2002, then Nenunnanu and Chatrapathi. Sivaji in 2007 was the peak of that stretch: opposite Rajinikanth, it became the highest-grossing Tamil film of its time. Awarapan the same year earned her critical praise in Hindi.
She has never stayed in one industry for long. The Other End of the Line in 2008 was an American debut, Kanthaswamy and Kutty took her back to Tamil, and Pokkiri Raja marked her Malayalam debut. Then Drishyam in 2015 and its sequel gave her one of the most watched Hindi thrillers in years.
