Sonu Nigam

Sonu Nigam, born July 30, 1973, is one of India’s most versatile playback singers. He moved to Mumbai at 19 to launch his Bollywood career and was trained by classical singer Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. His breakthrough came with the title track of Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), though his career spans three decades with work across multiple musical genres.

With a recording of over 6,000 songs in more than 32 languages, Nigam is regarded as the “Modern Rafi” for his vocal style reminiscent of legendary singer Mohammad Rafi. He’s performed internationally, becoming the first Indian solo artist to host concerts in Germany and Canada. He has won numerous awards including National Film Award, Filmfare Awards, and IIFA Awards for Best Playback Singer.

Beyond playback singing, Nigam has acted in films, directed music, worked as a dubbing artist, and judged reality TV shows including Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. He received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2022 in recognition of his contributions to Indian music.
