Sulaiman Merchant is one half of Salim–Sulaiman, an acclaimed Indian music composition duo with his brother Salim. Born in Mumbai in 1970, he trained extensively on tabla under legends including Ustad Zakir Hussain and Taufiq Qureshi. The brothers drew their musical foundation from their father, Sadruddin Merchant, who led the Ismaili Scouts Orchestra in India.
The duo emerged in Bollywood in the late 1990s and gained widespread recognition for scoring the horror film Bhoot. Since then, Salim–Sulaiman have become one of India’s most prolific film music teams, scoring over 100 films across multiple genres and languages.
Beyond film composition, Sulaiman and his brother have worked extensively in television, live performance, and music production. Their catalog spans intimate character dramas and large-scale blockbusters, establishing them as significant architects of contemporary Hindi cinema’s musical landscape.
