Born in Mumbai to a middle-class Marathi family, Sunil Gavaskar studied at St Xavier’s High School and was named India’s Best Schoolboy Cricketer in 1966. Selected for India’s first West Indies tour in 1971, he delivered an extraordinary 774 runs at an average of 155, immediately establishing himself as a generational talent.
Gavaskar became the first batsman to pass 10,000 runs in Test cricket during a 16-year international career spanning 125 Tests and 108 ODIs. He captained India in 47 Test matches, leading an attacking style that won the 1984 Asia Cup and the 1985 World Championship of Cricket, fundamentally reshaping Indian cricket’s competitive standing globally.
After retiring in 1987, Gavaskar transitioned to cricket commentary and column writing for major Indian publications, becoming a widely respected voice in sports journalism. His legacy redefined what opening batmanship could achieve and established new standards of professionalism in Indian cricket.
