Sushmita Sen

Sushmita Sen was crowned Miss Universe in 1994 at age 18, becoming the first Indian woman to win the title. She transitioned into acting with her debut in the thriller Dastak (1996), though initial success proved elusive. Her breakthrough came with the 1999 comedy Biwi No.1, earning a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress and establishing her as a prominent Hindi film actress throughout the 2000s.

Notable film roles include Aankhen (2002) and her biggest commercial success, Main Hoon Na (2004) opposite Shah Rukh Khan. After a career hiatus, she returned with the crime-thriller series Aarya (2020-2024), which won her a Filmfare OTT Award and demonstrated her enduring relevance in Indian entertainment. She also portrayed transgender activist Shreegauri Sawant in the miniseries Taali (2023).

Beyond entertainment, Sen is recognized as a feminist icon and philanthropist. She notably adopted two daughters as a single parent, challenging Bollywood conventions. Her advocacy for women’s empowerment, social justice, and personal independence has made her an influential cultural figure in India.
