Tabu

Tabu has spent a whole career being the actress other actors quietly envy, the one who can hold a scene with a look while the plot happens around her. She started young, worked across Hindi, Telugu and Tamil cinema, and never quite fit the standard heroine mould, which turned out to be the making of her.

Maachis and Chandni Bar won her National Awards and the arthouse respect; Mira Nair’s The Namesake took her international; and then, well into her fifties, Andhadhun and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 handed her a late-career run as the deliciously unreadable femme fatale. Few performers age this gracefully into their best roles.

She keeps her private life almost entirely to herself, unmarried and unbothered by the speculation that generates. A Tabu sighting is a low-drama, high-class affair for the pack, which is exactly her style.
