Known forUmrao Jaan, Bazaar, Jagjit Singh presents Talat Aziz
Talat Aziz belongs to a tradition that barely survives now. Born in Hyderabad in 1956 to Abdul Azeem Khan and Sajida Abid, herself a well-known Urdu writer and poet, he trained in the Kirana Gharana under Ustad Samad Khan and later Ustad Faiyyaz Ahmed Khan, and then learned ghazal from Mehdi Hassan. That is not a CV, it is a lineage.
His first album came in 1980, released under Jagjit Singh as Jagjit Singh presents Talat Aziz, which is about as strong an endorsement as the form could offer. Then Umrao Jaan in 1981 and Bazaar took his voice into films and to an audience far beyond the ghazal circuit.
Ghazal has spent forty years being declared dead, and singers like him have spent forty years quietly filling halls anyway.
