Terence Lewis

Terence Lewis emerged as Mumbai’s maverick choreographer after training at Alvin Ailey and Martha Graham in New York. His blend of classical rigor and contemporary experimentation caught Bollywood’s attention early: he won the American Choreography Award in 2001 for Lagaan alongside peers Saroj Khan and Vaibhavi Merchant.

By the late 2000s, Lewis had become a fixture on Indian television, judging Dance India Dance and Nach Baliye while running his eponymous Contemporary Dance Company. His teaching expanded the landscape of Indian dance training, blending Bollywood vocabularies with global techniques. The company became Mumbai’s de facto finishing school for ambitious dancers.

Lewis remains known for work at the intersection of spectacle and substance: commercial Bollywood films sit alongside arthouse experiments created with tsunami survivors in 2006. He represents a rare figure in Indian dance, classically trained abroad, commercially successful at home, genuinely invested in pedagogy.
