Varun Dhawan

Varun Dhawan is the son of the hit-comedy director David Dhawan, and he could easily have spent a whole career in the glossy, crowd-pleasing lane that surname opens up. The interesting thing about him is how often he has stepped out of it.

He launched in the star-kid confection Student of the Year and rode the Dulhania romantic-comedies to genuine mass popularity, then took the sharp left into Badlapur, a grim revenge thriller that surprised everyone, and October, a slow, sad Shoojit Sircar drama with barely a hint of the crowd-pleaser about it. Sui Dhaaga carried a whole social message on his shoulders.

He is a reliable commercial force and an even more reliable red-carpet and airport presence, one of the more approachable young stars for the pack. The cameras seldom struggle to find him around Mumbai.
