Vicky Kaushal

Vicky Kaushal is the son of the action director Sham Kaushal, but he built his name well away from anything his father could arrange for him, starting in independent cinema. Masaan, which premiered at Cannes in 2015, announced a serious actor before the mainstream had any idea what to do with him.

Then Uri handed him a war cry (“How’s the josh?”) that entered the national vocabulary and a National Award, and the trickier, quieter Sardar Udham proved the range was real. He works across the register from full-blooded patriotic spectacle to interior character study, which is a harder trick than it looks.

Married to Katrina Kaif, he is now half of a much-photographed couple, and his own easy charm makes him a friendly regular for the paparazzi. When he is out and about, the lenses are glad to see him.
